BIG KAISER, Live from iDays

It’s Thursday, May 10th, nearing the end of DMG / Mori Seiki’s annual iDays exhibition in the company’s U.S. headquarters right next door to us here at BIG KAISER, in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

More than 1,600 eager manufacturing professionals pre-registered for iDays, a figure not accounting for the multitude of walk-ups and on-site registrations. The 3 day attendance figures easily topped 2,000 people.

Doing our part to support our neighbors down the road, we kicked off festivities each morning with a Breakfast & Learn for iDays attendees at our place, with the informational session addressing dual contact machine tool spindle interfaces. Seats have been packed each day.

Jack Burley, our VP of Sales and Engineering at BIG KAISER, preached there’s more than one way to skin a cat with dual contact machine tool interfaces. BIG-PLUS®, HSK, Capto and others each have their place in the market, and each does some things well, others not as well. Burley recommended a comprehensive approach in making purchasing decisions in this arena, cautioning against letting the capability of the spindle interface be less than that of the machine, and thus the capability of the tooling being less than that of the interface. He also stressed the importance of carefully weighing production improvements and ROI over time against initial costs.

Jack Burley's morning educational session at BIG KAISER addressed dual contact machine tool spindle interfaces.

After breakfast at BIG KAISER, doors opened next door for educational sessions, demonstrations, lunch, conversations, meetings and receptions. For us, it’s always cool to see our tooling coupled with DMG / Mori machines, really a marriage of two premium brands. For instance, all Mori Seiki machines with steep taper spindles come equipped standard with BIG-PLUS ground spindles, and the new (star of the show) Mill Tap700 was rolled out with a variety of BIG KAISER tooling.

To try and sum up the event, we caught up with Matt Grasson, Senior Editor, GIE Media, Cleveland, who had his finger on the pulse of the iDays attendees and the chatter on the showroom floor.

DMG / Mori Seiki' s new, next generation compact machining center, MILLTAP 700, used BIG Kaiser tooling.

“DMG / Mori Seiki Innovation Days 2012 was a ‘must attend’ event for those in manufacturing. During the three-day event, I spoke with many individuals that found solutions to some of their main manufacturing problems,” he said. “Some of the solutions came from attending the more than 10 different event sessions which included ways to expand production, how to stay ahead of the competition and new aerospace applications. Other solutions came from the more than 35 different machine tools that were on display. And BIG KAISER took it another step in extending these optimizing solutions right down to the end of the tool. I would definitely put Innovation Days 2013 on your must attend event calendar.”
